Learn how to get and use an IDP
CAA is authorized to issue the IDP. It proves to other countries that you have a valid driver’s license issued by a competent authority in your country of residence.
Helpful information
The IDP is a special license that allows tourists to drive in international traffic without further tests or applications. It’s proof that the holder has a valid driver's license issued by a competent authority in their country of residence.
The IDP is valid in all the countries that signed the United Nations 1949 Convention on Road Traffic. Many other countries recognize the IDP and accept it in their territories even if they aren’t part of the agreement. CAA IDPs are valid outside North America except for those used for translation purposes or required by law.
It’s an extra photo ID that shows your driver’s license details in ten languages (English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, German, Arabic, Italian, Swedish, and Portuguese). Most car rental agencies will ask for an IDP even if it isn’t necessary to drive in their country.
To get an IDP, you need to:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have a valid Canadian provincial or territorial driver’s license
- Provide two recent passport photographs date stamped by the location that processed them (computer generated photos are unacceptable)
- Pay a fee of $31 CAD
Complete and sign a CAA IDP application form (no other form is acceptable)
