CAA Atlantic Consumer Email Policy

In 2010, the Government of Canada passed the Fighting Internet and Wireless Spam bill, Bill C-28, however, the majority of the legislation came into effect on July 1, 2014.

The legislation covers many types of electronic communications, including how Commercial Electronic Messages (CEMs) may be sent and received in Canada. The law will be enforced by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the Competition Bureau, and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

CAA Atlantic has always honoured the request of Members relative to the transmission of CEMs. Every CEM sent by CAA Atlantic includes the identification information required by this legislation, as well as an “unsubscribe” mechanism. Members have the option to change what information they receive from CAA Atlantic at any time. CAA Atlantic does not sell or share Member contact information with any of our Partners.

CAA Atlantic regularly uses CEMs to communicate with Members, as we believe it to be the best way to let Members know about rewards and savings at local retailers, contests, exclusive Member travel offers, and Members-only savings on insurance products.

Members who choose to unsubscribe can still be sent emails when a business or informational transaction has occurred or is required such as Membership renewals, travel plans and confirmations, and insurance purchases, as this type of communication is not defined as a CEM.

In order to comply with this legislation , CAA Atlantic has taken the following approach

CAA Atlantic is both an Association and a member-based not-for-profit organization as defined in the Act. By joining CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) Atlantic, Members receive benefits that they can only receive as a Member. As an association and a member-based not-for-profit organization, CAA Atlantic’s mission is to bring value to our Members and as such we need to be able to inform Members about the many benefits that they can realize only by being a Member. Further, a Member has a business relationship with CAA Atlantic when they join.

The Act provides a special type of implied consent for member-based not-for-profit organization. As a club and association, CAA Atlantic has implied consent for a Member recipient, (existing non-business relationship) as long as they are Members and for two years after the end of their Membership.

The exception is when a Member takes specific action to unsubscribe from receiving electronic communications. Any Member who has unsubscribed in the past or unsubscribes in the future will remain in our unsubscribed list and will not receive any CEM’s (unless they advise us otherwise). CAA Atlantic will include an unsubscribe option in all emails at the bottom of all electronic communications.
